WDS Connection in Mikrotik

Tutorial Make a WDS Connection in Mikrotik

Basic Theory Wireless Distribution System (WDS)

WDS (Wireless Distribution System) is a system that allows interconnection between the Access Point (AP). This system is used to extend the range of the wireless area, using multiple devices APs into a single entity, without building a network backbone. Terms in building a network of WDS is the AP must use a Band, Frequency, and the same SSID.

Differences in non-WDS Wireless and Wireless with WDS

Non-WDS Wireless AP
Wireless AP non WDS
Wireless AP non-WDS
In the picture above, if the user A from area to area AP 1 other AP (AP2 / AP3), the user will experience a loss of connection while before the area is connected to the new AP.
Wireless AP with WDS

In the picture above, if the user moves from area to area AP1 another AP (AP2 / AP3), then the user as if they remain in the same area without losing the connection.
Those are some brief explanations and theories about WDS. The proxy can be used to build a WDS network. WDS wireless feature on this can be enabled by going to the menu
wireless -> wlan1 -> WDS tab
Mode WDS Mikrotik
Mode WDS Mikrotik

WDS Mode Explanation Mikrotik:

  1. Dynamic Interface WDS WDS is automatically made when it determines other devices compatible AP
  2. Static is a WDS WDS mode Interface WDS that it created manually
  3. Dynamic WDS-mesh WDS mode is the same as Dynamic WDS, but only using the protocol HWMP + (Development of the standard WDS)
  4. Static-Mesh WDS WDS mode which is the same as the Static mode, just use the protocol HWMP +
HWMP (Hybrid Wireless Mesh Protocol) is the routing protocol to implement a mesh topology in a wireless network which is based on AODV (Ad hoc On-Demand Distance Vector) and tree-based routing.
For example the use WDS to Mikrotik I will share a tutorial on other blogs because of limited means to practice: D.
Wireless Distribution System (WDS) on Mikrotik to be made is like topology in the image below:

WDS method in principle make the access point with the same SSID, we need to know the MAC address of each access point, suppose that you already understand, let’s continue to configure each access point.
hand MikroTik
Make Interface Bridge and the STP tab select Protocol Mode in Rstp.
Enter the wireless interface to a bridge interface port that we make.
Wireless Configuration Interface, both wireless Mode, Frequency and SSID.

Afterward in Wireless Interface tab settings WDS WDS WDS Mode and Default Bridge.
Setting In Access Point MikroTik are finished then we proceed to the configuration in the access point NanoStation2
Ubiquiti side NanoStation2
Once we logged on our NanoStation2 wireless, select the tab Wireless and the Wireless Access Point Mode We select and enter WDS WDS Peers (MAC Address Wireless MikroTik Interface) that we can see on the General tab in the Wireless Interface Wireless MikroTik These interfaces.
Fox SSID and Channel (Frequency) adjust with Access Point Configuration MikroTik.
After the configuration is complete do ping test from PC Desktop to Laptop (make sure Subnet IP and firewall on both the computer package ICMPnya not on the block), if successful we ping from both sides of the configurations are correct, if it has not managed to please repeat or check back configuration we make.
